an ode to ROAM

I am a pescatarian which limits, not eliminates, my burger consumption. i do love my veggie burgers in all shapes and sizes and ive been able to find some scrumptious ones in my day. no doubt about that!
the Jiffy Burger from The Bear {with creamy peanut butter & jack cheese}; the Bistro House Made Garden Burger from Bistro 33 {made of Mushrooms, Oats, Almonds, Tofu, and White Cheddar} & the Plant Burger from The Plant Cafe Organic {from lentils, mushrooms, beets, cashews, bulgur wheat} are a few of my favorites.

BUT the veggie burgers from ROAM are my new #1. today i got the veggie BBQ burger {with Aged White Cheddar, BBQ Sauce, Caramelized Onions, Jalapeño Relish, Oil & Vinegar Slaw}. and ohhh sweet jeeesusss its like a veggie sloppy joe…but better!! the sauce is tangy. the bun fluffy. the onions sweet. and the relish and slaw are crunchy and add the perfect zing. it all comes together like a medley of flavors full of nostalgic & juicy layers and overall incredibly satisfying.
its AMAZING!!

wash it down with a House-made Agave Sweetened Blood Orange Soda & some sweet potato fries for pure ecstasy!

heres a peak at the last ROAM veggie burger i had. the Sunny Side {with Organic Free-Range Egg, Aged White Cheddar, Caramelized Onions, Greens, Tomato, and Sweet Chili Sauce}.

buns buns buns!

growing up in the Bay Area, a trip to San Francisco was always a celebrated event. i remember being a little pipsqueak in the streets of Chinatown & trying my first {and last} steamed pork bun.
it was spongey. dense. meaty.  …different.
since then, and since becoming a pescatarian, i never thought twice about this bun or baozi in general again…… until today, that is.

i went to Out The Door for lunch with my buddy Courtney and ordered the vegetarian curry special…. and swayed by Court’s order (imperial rolls + one steamed chicken bun) i decided to go crazy and throw in one steamed vegetarian bun for shits & giggles.

it was deeeeeeeeeelish! way better than the curry. way better than i remembered/expected. and a perfect little bulbous package of hot mushrooms, noodles + greens for only $3!

throw in some soy sauce and sriracha (in packet-form!!!)

and i’ve found myself my new favorite Ferry Building lunch!

huzzah!

wrap it up!

get your mind out of the gutter …im talking about FOOD!!

just wanted to comment on the latest food phenomenon that i am currently seeing… no, not food trucks or stupid mini-cupcakes…im talkin about new spins on the beloved BURRITO!!! Giant wraps, whether made from seaweed or chapati, are being filled with all kinds of inspired ingredients innovating every San Franciscan’s favorite meal.

Sushirrito just opened in SoMA claiming to be ‘A Fresh Way to Roll’ Sushirrito offers made-to-order, hand-held sushi burritos stuffed with savory Asian and Latin-infused flavors.

and then theres Avatar’s Punjabi Burritos in Mill Valley and Petaluma, combining Indian-inspired ingredients such as curried garbanzo beans, saffron rice & chutneys into giant rolls.

in conclusion, i see 2011 as the year of the ‘rito!!

o yeah… and i think YOURE fucking played out!

cake on a stick

the Winter Fancy Food Show is always a big food event here in San Francisco.

HUGE.

THIS big in fact:

  • 80,000 specialty foods and beverages
  • More than 1,300 exhibitors from 50 countries
  • 17,000 attendees

there’s all kinds of stuff to see and taste and smell. too many bits and bites of everything you could imagine to upset even the toughest of stomachs, but thats *part* of the fun!
this year however, the highlight for me was getting my hands on this lone cake lollipop from Charm City Cakes! it was GOOD!

it was also really fun to watch Duff & his crew create this SF-inspired cake!

pizza ecstasy…

Any true San Franciscan will be able to tell you that we have a PLETHORA of pizza places in this city.  And theyre not all restricted to say, the Italian district of North Beach, or the douchey late-nite bar-hopping hoods of the Marina. i could probably name at least one damn good pizza joint in each distinct neighborhood of SF.

some of my favorites from around town are Za, and Goat Hill. and of course i look forward to my weekly drunken, late-nite slices* from Extreme Pizza and/or Escape From New York.

{sadly, i still have yet to try pizza from Tammasos, Zero Zero, flour + water, Tony’sArizmendi Bakery, and probably a ton more. but optimistically, this means that there is room for my favorites list to grow!}.

ANYWAYS, there is one pizza place in particular that is just HEAVENLY to me… INCREDIBLE EVEN!
and recently a friend and I discovered an especially AMAZING combination of two special pizzas that just create one of the best meals in SF ever… EVER!

No, its not because the restaurant happens to be located below my yoga studio so that i have to stare as i pass by several times a week. or because they pretty much only focus on pizzas, so therefore have perfected the technique. or just because theyre hip by association….

NO.

its because DELFINA PIZZERIA in Pac Heights is just LEGIT BEYOND BELIEF.

theres nothing more i can say than that. you must experience it for yourself.

BUT i will share this amazing combo that i speak of.
it is achieved by sandwiching a slice of their Broccoli Raab {Star Route Farms Broccoli raab, caciocavallo, mozzarella, olives, hot peppers} + their special Purgatorio {spicy tomato sauce 2 farm eggs, pecorino romano}.

for some reason these pizzas dont photograph too well….but just take a look and imagine the possibilities!!!!! the spicy, the egg-y, the cheese-y, the chewy, the salty. and once you add toppings it’s just A-fucking-mazinG.

I LOVE DELFINAAAA
my next conquest is definitely the Chicorie Pie!!!   who’s comin with mee??

*these slices are not GREAT to begin with. but for obvious reasons, they are my faves while drunk.

Is nostalgia the new trend?

wanted to share Michael Bauer‘s article…because i concur!!

‘In San Francisco, we love the new but we also honor the tried and true… Restaurants are important personal and cultural markers; they are much more than just places to eat.’

****!!!!!******!!!!!****!!!!!******!!!!!****!!!!!******!!!!!****!!!!!******!!!!!****!!!!!******!!!!!****!!!!!******!!!!!****!!!!!******!!!!!

looking back on my 26sh years, many, many memories are anchored by food and restaurant experiences.
and i couldnt be more grateful!

…..my favorite faaavorite ‘classic place’ in the city??
