the Winter Fancy Food Show is always a big food event here in San Francisco.
HUGE.
THIS big in fact:
- 80,000 specialty foods and beverages
- More than 1,300 exhibitors from 50 countries
- 17,000 attendees
there’s all kinds of stuff to see and taste and smell. too many bits and bites of everything you could imagine to upset even the toughest of stomachs, but thats *part* of the fun!
this year however, the highlight for me was getting my hands on this lone cake lollipop from Charm City Cakes! it was GOOD!
it was also really fun to watch Duff & his crew create this SF-inspired cake!
amazing artist Kevin Van Aelst
Kevin Van Aelst’s work consists of ‘common artifacts and scenes from everyday life, which have been rearranged, assembled, and constructed into various forms, patterns, and illustrations. The images aim to examine the distance between the ‘big picture’ and the ‘little things’ in life—the banalities of our daily lives, and the sublime notions of identity and existence’.
words that sprung into my mind while scrolling through his portfolio were: things in places they dont belong, illusion, connectivity & interrelatedness… bottom line, i LOVE the playfulness and challenging qualities of his color photographs.

Many people take no care of their money till they come nearly to the end of it, and others do just the same with their time.
ahhhh it’s good to be HOME

What lies behind us and what lies before us are small compared to what lies within us.
A chef’s perspective
Reading this article from LA Timesfood Chefs Ferran Adriá, Juan Mari Arzak and José Andrés on ‘the future of food’ i had to stop and re-read Adriá’s statement: “In life, we separate the cowards from the non-cowards…those who want to live experiences cannot be cowards” and think to myself how very true it is. In regards to all aspects of life. What an apparent but undeniable idea.
i also like chef Andrés defending avant-garde cuisine with: “When I hear we do strange things, I don’t get it. For me, it’s more strange to have a ham and cheese sandwich with Coke.”
😉
great re-cap of the event. wish i could have been there!

There’s an eagerness about Geminis, an immediate, sympathetic, friendliness, and usually quick, but graceful movement.
